Renowned for his interpretations of this classic\, Yannick unites Orchestra\, soloists\, and chorus in a sound that is at once as “intimate as it is grand … notably warm and … remarkably tender\,” leaving “listeners ready to sing a glorious ‘Hallelujah!’” (Philadelphia). \n  \nThe Philadelphia Orchestra\nYannick Nézet-Séguin – Conductor \nPhiladelphia Symphonic Choir\nJoe Miller – Director

SUMMARY:Mozart Requiem - Philadelphia Orchestra and Symphonic Choir (Carnegie Hall)
DESCRIPTION:Performance Details\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNathalie Stutzmann Conductor\nErin Morley Soprano\nSara Mingardo Contralto\nKenneth Tarver Tenor\nHarold Wilson Bass\nPhiladelphia Symphonic Choir\nJoe Miller Director \nSchumann Symphony No. 4\nMozart Requiem \nMozart’s Requiem is shrouded in mystery; left uncompleted at the end of his life amid the torments of illness and financial woes\, it is imbued with Mozart’s own dark thoughts that the commissioning of a requiem\, while a boon to his spare funds\, was somehow a sign that his own life was in danger. Myths swirl around the “mysterious stranger” who ordered the piece\, including one theory that the commissioner was Mozart’s jealous contemporary and competitor Antonio Salieri\, as depicted in the play and film Amadeus. History shows that it was more likely that the dubious figure was a nobleman in the habit of acquiring works by gifted composers and passing them off as his own. In a creative frenzy\, pouring out his genius in an attempt to improve his fortunes\, Mozart was more productive in his final year than in any other period in his life. His Requiem’s “Dies irae” (Day of Wrath) blazes with theatricality\, and his ineffably sorrowful “Lacrimosa” remains one of the most beautiful passages in all of classical music. It’s conducted here by Principal Guest Conductor Nathalie Stutzmann\, whose beginnings as a contralto renowned for early music grounds her deep affinity with the work; her reading of this timeless score has been called “a wonder to hear” (ArtsATL). The soloists include the “diamond-bright (Presto) soprano Erin Morley; the “spellbinding” (Gramophone) contralto Sara Mingardo; Kenneth Tarver\, whose distinctive tenor boasts “an ideal blend of velvet and steel” (Gramophone); and the “profound bass” (Bachtrack) Harold Wilson.  \nThe concert begins with Schumann’s brooding\, passionate Fourth Symphony. Written during a crucial time in his life\, shortly after he married the virtuoso pianist and composer Clara Wieck\, Schumann’s Fourth was considered innovative\, even revolutionary in its time. He would return to it 10 years after its first writing\, reshaping and restructuring it to be the version you will hear in these concerts.

DESCRIPTION:Xian Zhang conductor\nAndrew Adelson oboe d’amore\nJana McIntyre soprano\nBarry Banks tenor\nHugh Russell baritone\nMontclair State University Chorale | Heather J. Buchanan\, director\nNew Jersey Symphony \n\n\n\nKodály Dances of Galánta\n\nKodály’s love for his native Hungary is evident in this sparkling and tuneful dance suite\, inspired by the folk songs he heard in the small market town where he spent part of his childhood. \n\n\nJ.S. Bach Oboe d’Amore Concerto\n\nYour first time to hear the oboe d’amore? This duskier cousin of the modern oboe has a soulful\, sweet sound that Bach adored and placed at the center of this piece of reverence and reflection. \n\n\nOrff Carmina Burana\n\nMedieval monks had more on their minds than scripture–women\, beer and the ever-turning wheel of fate most prominent. Orff set their words to dramatically colorful music in his iconic Carmina Burana.

SUMMARY:Brahms Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Performance Details\n\n\n\n\n\nYannick Nézet-Séguin Conductor\nGil Shaham Violin\nJeanine De Bique Soprano\nChristopher Maltman Baritone\nPhiladelphia Symphonic Choir\nJoe Miller Director \nBates Nomad Concerto\, for violin and orchestra\nPeña Laguna Oraison\, for chorus and orchestra\nBrahms A German Requiem \n\nFriday\nJan 26\, 2024\, 2:00 PM\nSaturday\nJan 27\, 2024\, 8:00 PM\nSunday\nJan 28\, 2024\, 2:00 PM \n\nFrom Mozart to Berlioz to Britten\, great composers have poured their souls into settings of the requiem mass. Unique among them is Brahms’s utterly beautiful A German Requiem\, written after the death of his mother\, with its emphasis not on the dead\, but on those left behind; not on loss\, but on the joy of remembrance. From its opening phrase\, “Blessed are they that mourn\, for they shall be comforted\,” to its transporting finale of triumph and tranquility\, it touches the hearts of all who hear it. \nWritten with the intention of being paired with Brahms’s Requiem\, Cuban-Canadian composer Luis Ernesto Peña Laguna’s choral work Oraison was created in reaction to the COVID pandemic. Sung in four languages—French\, Spanish\, Latin\, and English—it ends on a note of joyful hope as the chorus sings in French\, “We emerge/Barefoot on the rosy meadows/At the first morning sun.” \nAnother cause for joy: There’s an extraordinary\, palpable energy in the hall when musicians who have special regard for each other come together in performance. And that’s what you can expect when Yannick welcomes the preeminent violinist Gil Shaham back for the world premiere of Mason Bates’s Nomad Concerto\, a piece co-commissioned by the Orchestra. Bates’s “stunning\, staggering\, stupendous” (Classical Voice North America) Piano Concerto thrilled Philadelphia Orchestra audiences in 2022; now you can hear this heralded composer’s newest work with a violinist beloved by audiences around the world.

SUMMARY:Yannick and Bruckner - Bruckner Te Deum
DESCRIPTION:Performance Details\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYannick Nézet-Séguin Conductor\nElza van den Heever Soprano\nMichelle DeYoung Mezzo-soprano\nSean Panikkar Tenor\nRyan Speedo Green Bass-baritone\nPhiladelphia Symphonic Choir\nJoe Miller Director \nBruckner “Christus factus est”\nBruckner Symphony No. 9\nBruckner Te Deum \nBookended by two of Bruckner’s sacred choral works\, the transcendent and unfinished Ninth Symphony\, Bruckner’s last \, will be performed by Yannick and the Orchestra as the composer wished it: with his soaring Te Deum as its finale. Bruckner considered the Te Deum his masterpiece\, calling it “the pride of his life\,” and Gustav Mahler\, who treasured Bruckner’s score\, said it was written “for the tongues of angels.” Savor the infinite beauty of the human voice in this joyful\, majestic music\, performed by the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir and a cast of acclaimed operatic soloists.
