SUMMARY:BeethovenNOW: Symphonies 1 & 9
DESCRIPTION:Only a portion of the choir will be performing in this performance. Although all singers are guaranteed to sing at least one performance of this work\, there is no guarantee that Josh will be singing this night. Performances that Josh is not singing\, will be removed. \nThe year 2020 marks the 250th birthday of Beethoven. The Philadelphia Orchestra celebrates this milestone by performing music by composers of today in dialogue with Beethoven’s symphonies. Composer-in- Residence Gabriela Lena Frank\, and a diverse group of composers from her Creative Academy of Music offer newly written works that inspire and push boundaries—to elevate the context in which Beethoven’s legacy is understood today. \nBuy Tickets \nYannick Nézet-Séguin – Conductor\nAngel Blue – Soprano\nMihoko Fujimura – Mezzo-soprano\nRolando Villazón – Tenor\nQuinn Kelsey – Baritone\nWestminster Symphonic Choir\nJoe Miller – Director \nPROGRAM\nBeethoven – Symphony No. 1\nBeethoven – Symphony No. 9 (“Choral”) \nFriday\, April 3\, 2020\n8:00 PM\nCarnegie Hall – Stern Auditorium\nEnjoy a unique opportunity to hear Beethoven’s development as a symphonic composer in one evening with his first and last symphonies. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 respects the traditions of his teacher Haydn\, but surges with propulsive energy and intrigues with novel harmonies. The choral finale of Beethoven’s Ninth is revolutionary—it’s the first symphony to use voices—but its preceding movements also break new ground with their vast breadth and tremendous emotional power. \n \n  \n
